![]() I spent my childhood summers in Grass Valley and Auburn, California. On the weekends my family headed to the track to watch men become heroes on their Speedway bikes. My uncles and cousins poured themselves into cars and motorcycles. It took them years to perfect these bikes, endless hours of tweaking and tooling. Their machines gave them a sense of pride and a moment of freedom on the track. As I grew up, I lost track of Speedway. Many venues closed and my adult responsibilities cut family visits from summers to occasional weekends. While filming the documentary American Mullet, I befriended a pack of mullet: wearing bikers who dominated the Costa Mesa Speedway. Reunited with the sport, I immediately knew the script I had to write. I learned to race on a sidecar. I interviewed the hot shots of today’s circuit and I went back to the races I loved as a kid. I grew up with the character types in this script. They are a breed that is larger than life and becoming harder to find. They possess a specific code of honor that values integrity over wealth. I wanted to tell a story about the sense of accomplishment found through personal risk and sweat. This project illustrates the courage it takes to do right, not only by yourself, but also by the people around you. ![]() The producers for Team Speedway are Valerie Stadler and Steak House. They have produced a wide variety of projects, the critically-acclaimed indie feature By Hook or By Crook, the Showtime feature Cavedweller, and the documentary For the Love of Dolly. This producing team came together to work on this special project out of a love of good storytelling and a message that rocks. Speedway is a modern-day fable, an action movie with a heart of gold. The style is independent and the message is broad. We believe this is a small film with large breakout appeal. The story poses challenging questions about responsibility, glory and greed. It grapples with the human desire to do the right thing, when that thing is more difficult and seemingly less rewarding than just grabbing the glory for yourself. Tough questions are presented to young people everyday and their answers shape their world and experience. Both parents and teens will appreciate Speedway's message and be awestruck by the sport itself. By wrapping an important message in a fun and electrifying package, Speedway offers an exciting and entertaining experience that appeals to the whole family. | ||
